This model is the result of many years of personal research into one of the most remarkable technological advances of the 20th. century: The A4, or as it was known to the Allies, the V2, Vengance weapon 2. Although it was conceived as a destructive weapon its creator, Werner von Braun, had his sights on greater things, something that had been a dream of science fiction - flight into outer space. It was the first large-scale liquid fuelled rocket and its technology was way in advance of any other WW2 developments. In the post war years captured V2s led to the development of large scale military launch vehicles in the USA and USSR. The Americans were stunned when the Soviets launched 'Sputnik' satellite in 1957 and the Space Race began. It fell to von Braun, who had chosen to emigrate to the USA in 1945, to command the team that was set President Kennedy's the task to get an American on the moon by 1970. The success of the Saturn launch vehicle, a direct descendant of the V2, culminated with Neil Armstrong stepping foot on the moon in July 1969.
